Hassan Hajjaj, Graffix From The Souk Catalogue
"I have a collection of Arabic memorabilia and paraphernalia including stamps, film posters, shop signs, clothes and food packaging. There are probably more than 3,000 pieces in total. My son Tariq calls me a hoarder. I draw on it constantly in the styling and the set dressing for my photographs. My first body of work in the 1990s, Graffix from the Souk, referenced the designs of Arabic goods – from tinned tomatoes to washing powder. I still repurpose packaging to frame my pictures." - Hassan Hajjaj
Photographer, designer and filmmaker Hassan Hajjaj has strong ties to both Morocco and the UK. Born in the fishing town of Larache, Morocco in 1961 Hassan moved to London aged 12. Growing up immersed in London's club culture as it was emerging and taking shape during his teen years heavily influenced Hajjaj's practice and approach to creativity.
