Broken Column, 2024
Hand-printed one-color screenprint on 300gsm Wild White paper
29.7 x 42 cm
Edition of 33, with signed COA

The design is produced by passing a thin sheet of basalt stone through a traditional relief printing press, this print communicates the physical decomposition of the stone — a result of the extreme pressure produced by the printing process itself.  Through its fissures and fragments, the resulting impression speaks of both impermanence and resilience.bThe print’s surface also calls to mind topographic maps or areal imagery, connecting its microscopic format with the macroscopic landmass from which basalt is extracted. Each print is an artifact containing this complex story of the stone’s source, presence and absence.

Kamran Samimi grew up in rural Laupāhoehoe on Hawaiʻi Island to parents of Iranian and Norwegian ancestry. Informed by a strong sense of place and his multi-cultural identity his artistic practice centers on natural and indigenous ephemera —stones, wood, pigment, and land—as conduits to explore the intricate dynamics, tensions, and histories that exist between human and non-human ancestors.

This print was released during Kamran Samimi’s first exhibition with The Third Line titled Before Nature
(I Am Both Created and Destroyed), 2024.
